Another project for the history books – challenged by our long standing colleagues at ES Global and Mott McDonald to be the technical lead to design and build a 2000 bed hospital in record time, during the first few scary weeks of the pandemic lockdown, we had our work cut out… .
Within ten days of being on site we had the first 300 beds up and running. This was no field hospital. Unlike other such hospitals the Cardiff and Vale Health Board had set a high standard for ventilation, infection control and patient care, requiring compliance with Hospital Technical Memoranda for all mechanical, electrical and plumbing works.

The remaining areas of the stadium were converted in the next three weeks to become a further 1400 beds, complete with piped Oxygen, hospital grade power and a highly engineered ventilation air flow designed to take covid particles away from the nursing staff. The adjacent Cardiff Blues pitch was used for medical and production staff welfare facilities and the production village.
Production Science provided the technical solutions and power distribution and led the Mechanical , Electrical and Plumbing team from start to finish. Instrumental in the success of the MEP delivery was our portable BMS system, using nearly 100 of our Environmental Controllers networked across two stadia to control temperature and humidity and control teh Covid19 extract ventilation systems.
We also provided the site wifi and data logging.
Specialist M&E design was provided by Hoare Lee.
Aggreko supported the project with generators, air handling units and how water boilers.
MTD provided plumbing services.
Project direction and Site Management was by 9 Yards Ltd.
The project ran for 9 months before being replaced by a longer term facility at the Heath hospital.
