150 Years of John Lewis

2014 marked the 150th anniversary of John Lewis in the UK. As part of the celebrations the rooftop of the Oxford St store was turned into a garden, featuring the natural habitat of Monty the penguin together with terraces and a cafe.

Winter Olympics 2014

One of our prouder moments – to be responsible for power and audience lighting for an Olympic Games Opening and Closing Ceremony.

Not the easiest of projects, not without a few challenges, but definitely Sochi was one for the memoirs…..

This project took equipment from our Dubai and UK depots by road and sea,  with all the logistical challenges involved in working in Russia in an stadium under construction.

NATO Summit 2014

Production Science are proud to have been involved with the NATO 2014 Summit in Newport, South Wales. We were responsible for Network and IT services and Power provision across the main site at Celtic Manor and satellite venues at Cardiff Castle, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and Royal Navy type 45 Destroyer HMS Duncan, servicing delegations from 70 countries, including world leaders such as President Obama and David Cameron.

The network on a project of this scale was particularly challenging, with an extensive 10Gbps backbone being deployed on a site stretching over several miles with fully redundant Fibre Optic links to all areas of the network. A multiple security layer model was provided, with on and off site firewalls and data cleansing centres.

Wired, Wireless and Print services were provided in a large double deck Temporary Media Centre and 10 Media Conference venues, to service the requirement for 2500 journalists, photographers and broadcasters from the world’s media. Production Science consulted extensively in the design and provision of the internet services and firewalls for the event, working closely with BT and the UK Foreign And Commonwealth Office to provide the services on time and in a fully redundant design. The event had 3 x 1Gbps connections to the main site and 3x 100Mbps connections to the satellite sites, with ADSL backup.

We also provided temporary power to areas including media centre, broadcast facilities, press conference and the main meeting rooms. Celtic Manor Resorts power supply was deemed to be unsuitable for a high profile event of this nature as there would have been a delay in changeover in the event of a mains failure. We teamed up with Aggreko and installed 14 generators and over 15KM of temporary cabling across the event including installation on board HMS Duncan. All temporary electrical systems were designed with 100% redundancy via synchronised generators.

FCO Sexual Violence In Conflict

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth office hosted a summit on sexual violence in conflict at the ExCel centre , London.

This project required us to install an overlay IP wired and wireless network to provide connectivity to 1700 delegates and 123 country delegations, as well as 79 Ministers.

IPTV was also provided for show relay and host broadcast feed around the venue

Football World Cup 2014 Fan Zone

Production Science worked with Wasserman Media Group, Arena Structures, ES Global, Aggreko and Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy to provide HVAC, HVAC control, Power Distribution, Secondary lighting, Life Safety, Network and IT systems for a temporary fan zone venue, complete with opening roof. This project was designed as a test case to ensure that Qatar is ready for the FIFA Football World Cup 2022 and can provide suitably cooled hospitality for the visiting fans. 10MW of power and cooling was provided and operated. The brief included requirements for data capture and monitoring for cooling performance and subsequent analysis. On site synchronised SQL database servers were used to record data in real time and custom written code provided real time analysis of cooling conditions, enabling the operations team to make decisions on cooling and roof opening to ensure a comfortable visitor experience.

Museum of London

Production Science was engaged by Stage One Creative Services Ltd to provide the lighting and associated AV for the exhibition of the London 2012 Cauldron.

Beach Soccer Doha

Our principal brief for this project was to ensure the correct lighting levels for the field of play. Lighting is critical for the TV broadcast and stills photographers, but also there are Beach Soccer Association rules to ensure players have an evenly lit, adequately bright field of play without distracting glare.

The lighting was tested in simulation software to predict the lux levels and check the uniformity achievable in the vertical plane (for the camera shots) and in the horizontal plane (for the players benefit and compliance with association rules).

Daylight HMI type lighting was used to give the correct colour rendering for camera and to achieve the brightness required with the lowest energy level input. Aggreko acoustic canopy generators were used to reduce ambient noise levels for the benefit of broadcast sound, guests and neighbours. Back up is also a significant consideration for live broadcast and we provided additional tungsten lighting for match continuation in the event of generator failure and the generators were formed into failover arrays for reliability.

Actual lux levels achieved were around 5% better than predicted. We also provided site power and lighting.

Skype

When Skype had a need for a rock solid connection and Audio Visual support in The Roof Gardens for a very important call, we were pleased to be able to help them.

Fujitsu Tokyo

Production Science has been active in the Japanese market since our inception. We have always specialised in helping companies with live events and exhibitions in all areas of Japan.

We have two Japanese speakers on our staff, as well as a network of contractors within Japan upon whom we can call.  We are experienced in the cultural and technical issues of working in Japan.

We were recently asked to provide production assistance for WRG to assist them with their Fujitsu client for a Global Business Forum, held in Shiodome, Tokyo.

In addition to Japanese speaking  production management and technical support we imported scenic elements not available in Japan, and acted as liaison between the UK production team and the Japanese suppliers and venue.
